The United States is recognized worldwide to be the most generous nation on earth in spite of its greed and excess. Canadian radio commentator Gordon Sinclair said in the 1970s, at the height of American criticism abroad, that the United States is the "most generous and possibly the least appreciated people on all the Earth." Although that is true as an entire nation, here are the facts on personal giving in the United States. Low-income working families are the most generous group in America, giving away about 4.5 percent of their income on average, compared with about 2.5 percent among the middle class, and 3 percent among high-income families.
